Think you can’t pull off red lipstick? Murphy, who considers red a “dramatic neutral,” begs to differ. “There are so many different undertones and shades and textures that everyone out there can find their perfect red lip,” says the New York City makeup artist. He brings this same open-mindedness to beauty products, stocking his kit with everything from Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara to lipsticks from Nars and Yves Saint Laurent. “I buy anything that works. I’m not a snob,” he says. This attitude comes from humble beauty roots—and a little happenstance. Murphy got a temping job after college and worked for executives at M.A.C. and Estée Lauder. “It informed me how products are conceived and made, and about textures, ingredients, shades, and packaging. Those are all things I still consider when reviewing products for Allure, but now with an artist’s eye and experience.” Murphy has worked with Mariah Carey, Anne Hathaway, America Ferrera, and “just about every Victoria’s Secret Angel,” and he’s also done makeup for editorial shoots and New York Fashion Week.
