Back in 1999, every dollar I earned babysitting went straight from my hot-pink pleather wallet into the Bath and Body Works cash register. Sure, I hit up Limited Too and Express for my seventh-grade wardrobe staples (spaghetti-strap tops and platform shoes, obviously), but I most coveted the moment I could be reunited with the house of Warm Vanilla Sugar and Cucumber Melon, as it should be renamed.
Still, there’s one product that changed everything for me: Art Stuff Roll-On Glitter. It looked like a roll-on deodorant but left behind a sugary scent (Berry-Go-Round! Melon Mania!), and the best part: glitter. It quickly became my most versatile beauty product: my perfume, my highlighter, and my eye shadow (yes, I rolled it directly on my lids…maybe there was a warning on the bottle not to do that?). Of course, I complemented my roll-on with some of the other Art Stuff glitter products, like the lotion, spray, and gel. At least I knew the importance of layering at an early age.
When I rolled on my Art Stuff, I felt like I could be the sixth member of the Spice Girls, the newest addition to the Dawson’s Creek cast, or even a TRL VJ (move over, Carson Daly). I twinkled from my butterfly clips down to my confetti-encrusted pedicure. To 13-year-old me, anything that sparkled was beautiful, and when you’re in the very middle of middle school, anything that can give you that kind of confidence is invaluable.
