Did everyone’s parents go bonkers just to get them to take a bath? Mine creatively called it the “secret bath,” and they’d turn off all the lights in the bathroom, light a bunch of candles, and speak in hushed tones. (Looking back, the whole thing sounds like a not-too-bad spa experience.) But for most kids, all it took was the right bubble bath. Mr. Bubble, the pink bottle with the manic, smiling dude on the front, has been around for more than 50 years. It’s nostalgic on the level of Lip Smackers; it’s our Proustian madeleine. Now the fragrance masters at Demeter have found a way to bottle that nostalgia.
Demeter’s new Mr. Bubble Cologne Spray smells exactly—almost freakishly—like the original bubble bath you remember. The company describes Mr. Bubble’s scent as a “sharp, fruity concoction” and says it’s a combination of coconut, banana, peach, jasmine, balsamic vanilla, and raspberry notes. Perhaps a more sophisticated nose might be able to sniff each of those out, but to me, it’s eau de bubble gum.
