It is a lucky lady indeed who doesn’t have to wage a near-daily battle against technically not-blackheads taking up residence on her nose. (Who are you people?) For the rest of us, however, nightly mirror checks are more like sighing so gustily your downstairs neighbor feels a draft, applying some emergency Glamglow/a pore strip/just going at it with your fingers, then regretting it the next day when you wake up with indents on the side of your left nostril. Oh, and those greasy, snaky SOBs are still there.
The even worse news is that, hard as you try, there is no way to permanently eradicate sebaceous filaments. (That’s the party line, but that is also what they once said about polio, so keep praying.) Yet there is an inexpensive, easy-to-use device that can make the cycle not only a lot less tedious, but actually, compulsively fun.
Tweezerman No-Slip Skincare Tool, $10, target.com.
A humble instrument, Tweezerman’s No-Slip Skincare Tool nevertheless performs a function no human could do on her own: apply even pressure from nearly 360 degrees, which allows for clean extractions, less recovery time, and not pushing the infection deeper, like in a real-life, higher-stakes game of Operation. After a good steam, use the smaller, flat loop to excavate blackhead-like growths, and the larger end to coax out whiteheads that have aged to prime juiciness. You’ll find that your longtime enemies in the skirmish for clear skin will slide out with little protest, mostly.
With the tool, both the gameplay factor (clog removal as a test of skill and luck) and satisfaction (expelling a foul foreign mass from your body) of traditional poking and prodding are still present but heightened, like coming in first-place in Mario Kart because you know the cheat codes for spiny shells. It’s not exactly the “easy” setting, but when you’ve got something that makes success that much easier, everybody wins.
