*Allure* Beauty Scoop: Shantel VanSanten

The name may not sound familiar—yet—but Shantel VanSanten is probably the coolest actress you’ve never heard of (unless you were a die-hard One Tree Hill fan). And with two big TV roles this year (she’s playing an assistant district attorney on Fox’s Gang Related and an astronomer on the CW’s The Messengers), I’m pretty sure that’s about to change. I caught up with actress for a flash-fire round of questions.

Weirdest place you’ve ever filmed: “Moscow. Nobody really spoke any English, and I played a girl who’s a homeless heroin addict, so there wasn’t anything fun about that.”

Favorite product found while traveling: “This green tube called Skin Food. I first discovered it four or five years ago when I was in Berlin. It’s a really thick, heavy cream, so I put a bunch on my face whenever I get on an airplane. But now they sell it at Target.”

Must-have hair product:Bumble and Bumble Tonic. It gives me texture without looking too overdone. And I can’t live without dry shampoo.”

Best beauty trick:“People will say, Your skin is awesome.’ And I’m like, Oh, I just dumped a whole bunch of vitamin E oil on it.’ I’ll try anything.”

Favorite lipstick:Ruby Woo by MAC.

Worst look for a role: “Extensions. It was the worst thing in the world to me. You can’t just wash your hair and leave your house and let it air-dry. Never again. Just give me the clip-ins.”

Biggest beauty disaster: “When I cut my bangs supershort. I look like I was 12. Especially when you have wavy hair, you never just wake up with them looking cute. I just looked like I had a small poodle on my head.”

The discontinued product you’d bring back if you could: “There was this pumpkin mask from Peter Thomas Roth that I used to use that was the most phenomenal thing. It smelled like Thanksgiving dinner. And now it’s gone.”
