Last year, Ariel Winter, a.k.a. Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, made the decision to get breast-reduction surgery. She was an 18-year-old celebrity, so, predictably, the public announcement of her decision was met with commentary from fans (and critics). Winter largely chose to ignore the comments others made about her choice. But last weekend, Winter walked the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards wearing a gorgeous backless gown, showing off the scars left behind by the surgery left, and once again, social-media commenters proved that, in the words of Taylor Swift, “haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.” And this time, Winter had a response for them.
Winter took to social media to respond to the backlash she had received in response to—gasp!—baring her scars. On Twitter, she announced that she, like many other celebrities, is proud of her scars.
Guys there is a reason I didn't make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I'm not ashamed of them at all.

The actress also posted a Marc Jacobs quote about individuality to Instagram:

“Embrace all that you are… Scars & everything,” Winter wrote in her Instagram caption. “Your imperfections make you perfectly you.” When interviewed by People about her decision to get a breast reduction, Winter said she wanted to make it public so she could help other girls who are suffering silently with the same issue. “Being a five-foot-tall girl and having extremely large breasts is really ostracizing and excruciatingly painful. I’d just be wearing something anyone else could wear, but I’d read comments saying, ‘She dresses inappropriately,'” she told the magazine. “It’s important to talk about it because there are young girls suffering like I did, but there shouldn’t be a stigma about it.” Everyone, add Winter to your list of role models, pronto.
