The Met Gala is basically a gathering of interesting people — and interesting fashion and beauty looks, so even in room full of Rihanna dressed like the Pope and Katy Perry wearing angel wings, it stood out that there was one notable absence from the red carpet: Beyoncé. In fact, Beyoncé has been absent from the Met Gala for two years in a row.
But thanks to designer Michael Costello, fans can catch a glimpse of what might have come to pass on May 7. (The celeb reportedly skipped the event at the last minute after being surprised by husband Jay Z with a trip.) Taking to Instagram Stories on Friday, Costello gave a sneak peek at part of the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” themed wardrobe that had been designed for the singer.
Costello was visiting the studio of jewelry designer Marianna Harutunian — who also created pieces for Nicki Minaj and Cara Delevingne for this year’s red carpet — when he had the opportunity to try on the actual headpiece that was designed for Bey herself. “Guys,” he said in the video in his Instagram story, “this was supposed to be Beyoncé’s Met Gala hat.” In the video, which has since been removed from Michael’s personal Instagram, he also confirmed that the headpiece is just as heavy as looks.
Now we’re just left with the remaining mystery of what the rest of her outfit was supposed to look like. It has been said that Peter Dundas designed a custom dress that took weeks to make a perhaps inspired by her goddess-like Grammys look from last year.
