When Chrissy Teigen asks for a not-too-perfect makeup look for the Grammys 2017, she get not-too-perfect makeup that looks completely perfect. We talked to her makeup artist for the night, Patrick Ta, after she walked the red carpet in a black bondage-inspired dress. BTW Ta let us know that the last-minute dress option was definitely meant to coordinate with her husband, John Legend, who is performing tonight. Ta’s worked with Teigen for years—he’s also the go-to guy for Gigi Hadid, Sophia Bush and Shay Mitchell BTW—however, this is the first time he’s done her makeup for the Grammys. “She didn’t want to look too perfect,” Ta tells Allure. “So I went for a pretty grunge look.”
Before combining Teigen’s signature glowy look with a super smoky eye, Ta prepped her skin with the perfect-for-Valentine’s-Day Sephora Collection Face Mask in Rose. (We’re obsessed with rose-infused skin care right now, too.) Then, he moved onto create a flawless, dewy base by mixing some oil into foundation. He blended in the glowy concoction with The Makeup Drop. ICYMI the silicone makeup sponge made it’s first red carpet appearance at the SAG Awards. Next, using the narrow tip of The Makeup Drop, Ta tapped on the lighter shades from the Sephora Collection Contour Palette under her eyes. These shades were also used to highlight her forehead and bridge of her nose. Because Teigen’s skin was already tanned before the show, Ta says he used blush instead of bronzer to add definition. He swept the Sephora Collection Colorful Face Powders in Hysterical (a rosewood) and Passionate (a coral) onto Teigen’s apples.
As for her eyes, Ta created the sultry look with the help of copper shadow and lots of liner. The Sephora Collection Colorful Eyeshadow in Lucky Penny (a glittery champagne with a hint of copper) was brushed onto Teigen’s lids first as a base. Then, the same shadow in Copper Rush (a shimmery copper) was applied to her creases. To add more gold and edge to the look, Ta brushed Tahitian Pearl (a deep gold-flecked bronze) on top of both shades. Ta says he was sure to apply the shadows far beyond her brow bones to make the smoky eye more dramatic. For added depth, Ta lined her upper and lower waterlines with a black liner on a thin liner brush, then blended it out. And here’s his unexpected trick of the night: Ta set the liner with the same powder he set Teigen’s foundation with—the Sephora Collection Smoothing Translucent Setting Powder. This extra step is sure to keep her liner from smearing while she dances along to Legend’s performance.
Last but not least, Ta did some more mixing for Teigen’s lip color. Because the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 22 Pink Latte was too light and 23 Copper Blush was too dark, he found the perfect nude by combining the cult-favorite lipsticks. Then, he finished off the look with a bit of clear gloss. “It’s easier to wear than a matte lipstick,” Ta says. Also, “The rest of the face was dewy, so I wanted to bring it all together,” he adds. And it looked so damn good.
