The day Jennifer Lopez makes a mistake on a red carpet is the day we know the world is coming to an end. So of course, per usual, she killed it at the 2016 Golden Globes with her hair, her dress, her makeup—literally everything.
There’s one thing Lopez did exceptionally well: pair a bright-yellow dress with bold red lipstick. It’s a risky look—choose the wrong shades of either and you could end up looking like a ketchup-and-mustard-smothered hot dog. But it’s been done successfully before by other actresses, like Michelle Williams and Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie. Back in 2014, makeup artist Nick Barose let us in on why the the red-lipstick-yellow-dress-combo works so well. “Combining two primary colors, like yellow and red, makes each color look even brighter and adds a younger, quirkier touch to the red lipstick,” he says. “It’s a dramatic look, but whereas a black dress with red lips looks formal and classic, yellow and red together look more youthful and fun.”
Makeup artist Quinn Murphy’s advice for pulling off two such bold colors at once? It’s all about keeping the rest of your makeup balanced. “Too much color will make this combination costumey. The beauty of this look is in the minimalistic and simplistic clash of unexpected colors,” he says. “Your blush should be light and your eye makeup soft.” Lopez’s go-to makeup artist, Mary Phillips, was the genius behind this look, and she nailed the minimalistic approach. To complement the bold lip color, she kept Lopez’s eyes simple with a generous dose of mascara and finished the look with a hint of subtle contouring. Of course, having Lopez’s agelessness and flawless skin certainly don’t hurt.
