Laverne Cox Taught Us How to Pull Off Her Bold Makeup Look

Sure, we never think Laverne Cox ever looks anything short of stunning, but the actress may have outdone herself at last night’s premiere of Ricki and the Flash in New York City. She paired bright-red lips with superdark smoky eyes—a look that’s not normally easy to pull off. What’s even more impressive: Cox did her makeup herself.

“My makeup artist Deja Smith has been encouraging me to go bolder and darker with my lip color,” Cox says. “I study what she does, but I don’t have her touch. When I do my own makeup, I tend to do the same things, but Deja has inspired me to up the beauty ante.”

Cox started by applying Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, and then she lined her lips with M.A.C. Lip Pencil in Mahogany, making sure to fill in the entire top lip. “I then applied M.A.C. Lipstick in Stunner, an appropriately named color, generously to my lips,” says Cox.

To create her smoky eyes, Cox used the charcoal shade in the Maybelline New York The Nudes Palette. “I kept the richest color concentrated on the lids and close to the lash line and blended out into the crease,” she explains. “Then I used L’Oréal Paris Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner__ in Noir__ to line the eyes, top and bottom.”

Cox’s best tip for getting great lashes on the fly? Buy falsies in bulk. “I found these fun false lashes from de Prettilicious online,” she says. “They have interesting, fun combinations that come in a ten-pack. I love bulk shopping whenever possible.”

As for why Cox was at the premiere of Ricki and the Flash? The answer is quite simple, really: “I was there because Meryl Streep is a goddess,” says Cox. We can’t argue with that.
