One look seen at the American Music Awards this past weekend really stood out to me: Colbie Caillat’s awesome eye makeup. The singer matched her gunmetal gray dress and turquoise earrings with black liner traced on the inside of her lashes and a shimmery turquoise shade smudged all around her eyes. Totally pretty, totally wearable, and totally one of my favorite color combinations for the next few months.
I first saw turquoise and black paired together backstage at Stella McCartney this past season, when makeup artist Pat McGrath lined the models’ bottom lashes with turquoise liner and coated the top lashes in black mascara. It was so subtle but so beautiful, and I immediately wanted to wear it every day. The black contrasts with the blue-green, making the color really vivid, but it also tempers it just enough.
McGrath’s version at Stella is a more casual way to wear the combo (I’d wear this at the office or on the weekend for brunch), while Caillat’s liner-shadow feels more glamorous (better for a night out). If you want to try it, the key is to show just a hint of turquoise, not to spread it all over your eyes. Try turquoise pencil (like Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Abbey Road) traced across your top lashes with black pencil lining the bottom. Or try black liquid liner stretched across your top lashes and flicked out into a wing. Then with either turquoise shadow or pencil, draw a line on top of the black so just a sliver of blue flashes as you blink.
