It seems like every day a new designer is coming out for or against dressing future First Lady Melania Trump. Now hairstylist Tricia Kelly is making news for her decision not to work with President-elect Donald Trump’s second wife, Marla Maples, and their 23-year-old daughter, Tiffany Trump, on Inauguration Day. But it isn’t based on Trump’s politics. This time, it comes down to money and getting the respect she feels she deserves.
The Washington Post reports that Kelly, who is a freelance hairstylist, was asked to do Maples’s and Tiffany Trump’s hair through a mutual contact. When she gave her usual fee, she was told the pair only had a $300 budget for hair and makeup, which is less than Kelly usually charges. Still, she says she worked with them and they agreed to pay Kelly $200 for their hair, as well as $150 to a makeup artist to get them both ready for the day. But then Maples’s assistant reportedly asked Kelly to instead work for “exposure,” i.e., for free, and that Maples would post about her hair on social media. Kelly turned down the offer. “I was stunned,” she told the Washington Post. “I told them…I work for a fee, not for free.”
“There are people who make far less than they do who pay full price,” she continued. “People on staff—the incoming White House and the outgoing one—pay full price. It seemed like they were trying to see how much they could get for free based on their names.”
You might not like that Tiffany and her mom asked for free services, but it’s not illegal. The Washington Post points out that only the president, his spouse, and his minor children have to report all gifts valued at $300 and more. This doesn’t include Maples and Tiffany. Tricia Kelly wasn’t sure about speaking out in the first place but wanted to shed light on what she calls “entitled” behavior.
