View From the Red Carpet: *Great Gatsby* Makeup Tips

After decades of 1920s theme parties, we all know how to dress like a flapper, but what about Jazz Age–inspired hair and makeup? On the red carpet at the New York City premiere of The Great Gatsby at Lincoln Center, director Baz Luhrmann, his wife, Catherine Martin (who designed the film’s costumes with an assist from designer Miuccia Prada), and some of the stars talked to Allure.

Baz Luhrmann: “I’m very clear that I wanted it to be modern. Because the modern era began then. Two years earlier, women would have had dresses down to their ankles. And suddenly they’re wearing their underwear as a frock out on the street. They’re liberated. They’re smart, they’re educated. They’re meeting in speakeasies, they’re drinking alcohol. The big party has begun. And it hasn’t stopped.”

Catherine Martin: “Baz’s big thing was to not have a nostalgic New York. He wanted people to look as sexy and modern and real as they did to their contemporary audience. We used a lot of very smoky eyes. Isla Fisher has a classic bow lip, like Clara Bow. And, for the drama, although they hadn’t been invented by then, we used very dramatic eyelashes.”

Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan): “The makeup look was devised entirely by Catherine and Baz. We tried to take as much from the short description of her actual features that there are in the novel. It was sort of an hour and a half in the chair every day, very easy. I had a wig, and I had a beauty spot drawn on. And they drew out my eyebrows and I had a few fake lashes.”

Isla Fisher (Myrtle Wilson): “They did very long hair extensions. They did a very thin pencil bow mouth, like Clara Bow had in the ’20s. There was very little cheek, but large eyebrows that kind of continued down, right to the end of your eyes. I enjoyed wearing it, but it was too theatrical for my everyday life.”

Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby): “[Baz and Catherine] really try to do their detective work and get to the root of Fitzgerald’s work and try to bring that out cinematically.”

View From The Red Carpet: * Great Gatsby * Makeup Tips

Isla Fisher (Myrtle Wilson): “De gjorde meget lange hårforlængelser.
