If you haven’t experienced the joy of having a friend hit you on the wrist with a slap bracelet, you truly missed out. Most slap bracelets cost just a few dollars (accessible to middle school kids who loved them), and came in a variety of different styles and textures. I distinctly remember owning a batch of bracelets in pink holograph, neon, and even faux fur, all of which I found at pre-teen dream store Claire’s.
Now, Balenciaga is getting in on the throwback trend in a major way. The French brand’s cycle bracelet just hit stores and comes in two neon colorways (neon pink and lemon lime), complete with the “Balenciaga” logo. The piece functions exactly like the slap bracelets from the past, except for the fact that it’s Italian-made and rendered in textured leather. The price? A cool $195.
This isn’t the first time slap bracelets have tried to make a high-fashion comeback. In 2013, Opening Ceremony released fox fur versions, priced at $390 a pair. Kenzo also quietly released slap bracelets around this time, one of which is still available for purchase on eBay. In 2009, French model and socialite Julia Restoin-Roitfeld also attempted to bring them back from the grave by wearing a bunch of glowing orange versions on her legs during an after-party celebrating the opening of entrepreneur Dasha Zhukova’s museum in Moscow.
We’ll admit the idea of a high-fashion slap bracelet had us puzzled for a good minute or two. But creative director Demna Gvasalia has a reputation for appropriating from the uncool or unexpected sources, and making everything he sends out on the runway (including those Bernie Sanders-inspired, ’90s-dad ensembles) highly covetable. The brand’s most recent runway show in Paris even included evening clutches made of recycled side-view car mirrors. If the hype around Gvasalia is any indication, we’re betting these accessories will fly off the shelves very soon.
