When it comes to beauty, fragrance is just about as personal as it gets. This is because smell is easily one of our strongest senses and can dictate things like whether you’re attracted to someone or not. Most fragrance fiends either have their favorites on rotation or if monogamy is more their style, stick to one signature scent to be remembered by. There are so many out there to choose from, including niche, under-the-radar options, as well as cult classics that have been around forever.
What’s more? Certain scents may be favored over others, depending on where you live. For instance, West Coast dwellers may reach for a light, citrusy fragrance over a stronger musk purely because it lends itself better to laid-back beach vibes. Believe it or not, the aforementioned geographical theory was recently confirmed by Fragrance.com, who was able to nail down the most popular scents by state according to their sales data. And if you ask me, the results are pretty damn surprising.
I was expecting each state to fancy a different fragrance (makes sense, no?), but such is not the case. Dolce & Gabbana’s famous Light Blue actually snagged the number one spot, slaying a total of 17 states — New Jersey, New York, and Wisconsin being just a few of many. Coming in at number two is Calvin Klein’s Eternity, which people in California, Oregon, Texas, and more are apparently ride-or-die for. Calvin Klein also grabbed the number three spot with Obsession, stealing states like Arizona, West Virginia, and Idaho.
