When I met Mary J. Blige to interview her for Allure’s August issue, I noticed right away that she smelled good. (And then I also noticed her orange python-print heels. Hot!) She was wearing her new perfume, My Life, a spicy blend of gardenia, pear, freesia, and sesame that will be sold exclusively on HSN. And anyone who wears it also does good: for every $55 bottle sold, $1 will go to the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, a nonprofit organization Blige co-founded that supports women’s development and education through scholarships. Why does Blige care so much about this cause? Growing up in a rough neighborhood, she saw women facing abuse; after dropping out of high school, she also survived a destructive relationship in her 20s. She told me, “I came out the other side,” which is why she’s so dedicated to helping other struggling women. You can check out Blige’s debut on HSN and purchase My Life tomorrow, July 31 at 1 A.M. EDT (If you miss it, there will be other segments later tomorrow, at 8 A.M., 4 P.M., and 10 P.M.)
For more on Mary J. (such as why she thinks she’s like rotisserie chicken—no, it makes sense when you read it, trust us), check out the August issue of Allure. And watch a behind-the-scenes video of our photo shoot with Blige to learn more about what inspired My Life.
