Until trailers for the movie I Feel Pretty showed Amy Schumer’s character falling off her SoulCycle bike and having a clump of hair ripped out by a wheel, it never even crossed my mind that I should be concerned that my long hair could get caught in a stationary bike. What a far-fetched fear, right? But now that stories have emerged claiming that it actually happened to none other than Beyoncé just a couple of months ago, I think I might have just developed a legit spinning phobia. (Picture me saying the rest of this with a flashlight under my face, ghost-story-style. It’s that scary.)
The Sun reports that Beyoncé had been attending SoulCycle classes in Los Angeles in late 2017 and early 2018 as part of a post-pregnancy, pre-Coachella workout routine. According to an unnamed source who witnessed the incident, the national treasure had a terrifying moment when her super-long hair got tangled in her bike’s wheel.
“Beyoncé worked out at the public SoulCycle classes all the time last year, but a few months ago she had really long braids and hadn’t tied them back properly,” according to The Sun‘s anonymous source, who sure seems to be victim-blaming there a little. Did you pick that up? Whatever, unnamed source. “She was getting really into it when one got caught in the wheel. She had to stop straight away, and there was a bit of a commotion. Bey couldn’t move and the panicked staff had to yank her hair out of the machine. It was a real scare.”
Can you even imagine being the SoulCycle employee entrusted to detangle Queen Bey’s hair from a bike wheel? Is it the best day of your life? The worst? Are you simultaneously loosening her hair with one hand and signing a nondisclosure agreement with the other?

Anyway, the source said, “Beyoncé was fine afterward as the braids were only extensions, but it shook her up.” Wait — only extensions? Those extensions are braided in with her real hair. Getting them caught in something can do as much damage and cause as much pain as getting the hair that grows from your follicles latched on to something. Strike two, unnamed source.
“She always used to come into the class after the first song, sit on a bike at the back and leave during the last tune to avoid being noticed by anyone,” the source continued. “But she hasn’t been back.” Cue ominous thunderclap. She was never seen again! Well, OK, she was never seen at that SoulCycle location again. Obviously, she was seen, heard, and worshipped at Coachella, with no signs of hair trauma.
Allure reached out to SoulCycle for a comment about the alleged incident, but we haven’t received a response yet. In the meantime, be extra-careful with your long hair and consider wrapping it up in a top knot before your future spin classes.
