We’ve been hearing whispers of Beyoncé’s new braided do all week—and by whispers we mean we’ve scoured the Internets for sketchy pixelated images of the back of her head at a Nas party (What? You think Michelle Obama is the only one obsessed with Bey?). So when she was finally photographed on the street this week, it made me Lose My Breath. Yes, the braids are cool. But what’s even better? The mini Destiny’s Child reunion wrapped up on top of her head.
Knowles looks exactly like she did more than 10 years ago, when she appeared on MTV’s TRL tour (and when Destiny’s Child won Group of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards. Is that even still a category?). Some are asking, Is She the Reason? Referring of course to Knowles’s sister, Solange, who rocked superlong braids in 2011 and is an advocate for women embracing their natural texture. But we think the Independent Woman (sorry, we’ll stop with the Destiny’s Child puns) is using the look to escape the NYC humidity this week. Last time we checked it was at 62 percent.
But before you go out and braid your entire head, let us Cater to You (OK, seriously, we’re done this time). Doctors have been warning us for years against cornrows, as they put pressure on the scalp and cause hair to fall out faster. Not to mention, we tried this on vacation in Mexico once, and let’s just say the pulled-back look isn’t for every forehead.
So rock this look once, maybe twice, in your life, and when humidity strikes again, put down the blow-dryer, bust out some curl cream, and just go with it. There’s no sexier attitude than that.
