An Ohio father may need to turn in his “#1 Dad” mug after allegedly forcing his teenage daughter to cut off all but a couple of inches of hair when he disapproved of her new highlights. In a public Facebook post, mom Christin Johnson shared three photos of her daughter, Kelsey: The first one was taken shortly after she was treated to blonde highlights for her birthday and then two show her with a dramatically shorter haircut after visiting her father and stepmother.
“This is what my daughter looked like Sunday when I took her home,” Johnson says of the photo in which Kelsey’s highlighted hair reaches far past her shoulders. “And the other two pics is what happened today before she was brought to me… all over me having highlights put in her hair for her birthday!”
Kelsey appears devastated in the photos featuring her short haircut, which was allegedly given to her as punishment when her father, Schaffen Frederick, and stepmother, Sarah Murray, objected to the highlights. Frederick and Murray are now under investigation by the Haskins Police Department and Wood County Children’s Services, and have been put on leave from their firefighting jobs.
“I’ve been doing this since ’92 and I’ve never had a case I would say that’s like this,” Haskins police chief Colby Carroll told Cleveland’s Fox 8.
Johnson’s original Facebook post has gone viral, being shared more than 25,000 times and garnering over 2,000 comments, many of which send supportive and encouraging messages to Kelsey and her mother.
“You are beautiful and know that your hair doesn’t make you,” one commenter wrote. “There are other ways to have long hair. Wigs, weave, extensions and extra. If that’s what you want. And know that you have a right to say no to anyone even family and friends.”
“I’m a father of a teenager girl and I too don’t like her to highlight or color her hair but this here is absolutely disgusting,” another commenter wrote. “Thank you for posting this. It really puts my feelings towards my daughter’s choice in hairstyle into perspective.”
Johnson has followed up her original Facebook post with a second set of photos showing her daughter enjoying an afternoon at a local salon, where the staff helped her pick out a wig that gave Kelsey back some of the confidence she lost after her unwanted haircut.
“I’d like to thank the ladies at Lady Jane’s on Glendale in Toledo, OH for making my baby feel more like herself,” Johnson gratefully wrote. “She got her smile back because of you ladies and your selfless acts of kindness! We truly appreciate you ladies so much!”
No charges have been filed against Frederick and Murray yet.
