When I first saw this amazing four-strand braid float down the runway at Donna Karan, I was entranced. How did they do that? Turns out, it’s a little bit complicated. We enlisted hairstylist Matt Fugate of the New York City Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon to walk us through every single step—through his point of view.
Fugate wore Google Glass while executing this braid so you can see exactly how it’s done (and pretend you’re a hairstylist for a few minutes). I followed along and copied the steps below, tweaking it slightly so it will work if you’re braiding your own head.
__1. Section.__Divide your hair into four sections—one from your forehead to your crown, one above each ear, and one from your crown to your nape. Drape them straight down your back between your fingers in your left hand.
__2. Cross.__Holding all four sections between the fingers of your left hand, take the center-left piece and cross it over all the hair all the way to the right. Hold that piece with your free right hand.
__3. Add a section.__Move one section from your left hand to your right—it should be the one closest to your right hand.
__4. Twist.__Twirl the two remaining left sections once with your left hand.
__5. Repeat.__Pull the two sides apart to tighten the braid and repeat steps two and three on alternating side (crossing the center-right piece over to the left and twisting the two right sections). Continue until you reach the ends, and secure the braid with a small elastic.
Phew! Got all that? Show us your impressive four-strand braids on Instagram and Facebook! And watch out for more Google Glass videos coming soon from Allure.
