When we saw this surfer-meets-rocker-chick hair color on Rachel Bilson, we needed to find out exactly how to get it—right away. So we asked colorist Marie Robinson, owner of the Marie Robinson Salon in New York City, how to copy the look. “Ask your colorist to keep the hair dark on top and through the mid-shaft of the hair—almost a chocolate brown—and then ask them to lighten all your tips of your hair to a pale baby blonde,” she says. Explain that you want it to look “like someone dipped your ends.” Almost anyone can pull off this look, which requires absolutely no upkeep due it its obvious roots, but she warns that people with damaged, dry ends should get a trim first: “You don’t want to bleach ends that have already been damaged by color or a lot of styling.”
