One of our favorite celebrity hair hair makeovers from the first weekend of Coachella came from none other than Solange Knowles, who debuted a reddish-brown dye job, done by her hairstylist Jawara.
Her voluminous lighter locks are a pumped up version of the hair color she showed off during Paris Fashion Week last month, and is just perfect for the festival season. After all, warm weather months are the a great time to experiment with a lighter hair hue. Solange’s new color is definitely serving summer hair inspiration, but before you run off to the colorist to get Solo’s look, the singer’s hairstylist has a few tips and lots of tea on how he executed the style.

Read on for all the deets on how Jawara achieved this color, and his tips for women with afro-textured hair on managing their texture in the heat and humidity.
How did you guys come to the decision to cut and color?
Solange is always evolving as an artist and personally. She decided she wanted to go lighter with her hair, but not too light, as well as give [her hair] a shorter Afro-chic length.
What’s different now about the cut?
It’s more cropped and not as voluminous as it was before.
Specifically, what’s different about the color? It seems like an evolution of what her hair during Paris Fashion Week.
The color has light auburn, honey blonde, and cinnamon brown hues in it now.
It also seems like there’s a fluffier, more disco-like texture and volume.Yes, the texture is more airy than usual. She loves very light and effortless hair – maybe a bit brushed and tossed sometimes.
Since she’ll be at Coachella, and tips and/or product recommendations for our natural-haired girls on embracing their texture in the heat and humidity?
The humidity at Coachella is serious, so I would encourage anyone with natural hair to moisturize and leave it in its more natural state, maybe with a little curl-defining serum. Anti-humidity products will wear off, and I think the whole point of the festival is to be free and express yourself in the more organic fashion while listening to great music.
