It’s no secret that we’re more than a little obsessed with hairstylist Kristin Ess. She’s the force and talent behind Lucy Hale and Lauren Conrad’s perfect hair, and she also helps run one of the coolest beauty websites around, the Beauty Department. This week, Ess shared a bobby pin hack that exemplifies just how much of a hair genius she is.
One of the most annoying things about doing your own hair is putting it up, only to have all those bobby pins glaring back at you. Even if you’re using bobby pins that are the same color as your hair, you still end up seeing the shine of the metal. Ess has a simple solution: colored dry shampoo. By spraying bobby pins with dry shampoo that’s the same color as your hair, you’ll mattify them, which helps them blend right in.
To do this properly, Ess suggests laying your bobby pins out on a towel. “Shake your colored dry shampoo well and simply spray each pin from approximately two inches away, moving slowly from one side to the other,” writes Ess. Once they’re dry, flip them over and spray the other side.
You can even use this hack once the bobby pins are already in your hair. “This works equally well if you pin up your hair and then spray dry shampoo on any pins showing,” writes Ess. “It just might be a (literal) stretch to get any rogues in the back of your head.” Here’s what the matte, dry shampoo–sprayed bobby pins look like compared to non-sprayed ones:
Another benefit of spraying your bobby pins with dry shampoo? Hairtylist Mark Townsend once told us that he does it because it helps the pins stay in place. Bobby pins that you can’t see and hold better? Amazing! The only downside is finding colored dry shampoo, but don’t worry, Ess has you covered with a few great suggestions.
