Sita Abellan’s life became much cooler a few months ago when she was asked to appear alongside Rihanna as one of the henchwomen in the pop star’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” video.
And ever since the video premiered earlier this month, the 22-year-old Wilhelmina model’s life has been busy with new projects. Part of her newfound fame rests on her penchant for bold hair color. Right now she’s rocking hot pink:

“I started dyeing my hair about six months ago, when I first moved to New York City,” says Abellan. “I dye it almost every week now because every time I wash it, it starts to fade.” As you might imagine, the process isn’t easy on her hair. At her first color appointment, Abellan had colorist Aura Friedman bleach her naturally brown hair white so the bright colors would pop, and over the past half a year, Abellan has had Friedman bleach her hair five more times. Here are her tips on how to keep rainbow-colored hair as healthy as possible.
Use Manic Panic hair color. This vegan semipermanent hair dye washes out after four to six weeks. “My favorite is Manic Panic Cotton Candy,” Abellan says.
Keep cool. “I try to shower with cold water, and I blow-dry my hair on medium heat,” says Abellan. “Since your hair is already a bit destroyed from the bleach and it’s weak, adding heat damages it further and makes the color fade faster.”
Go crazy with nourishing treatments and products. Abellan says it’s important to shell out the money for a nourishing hair treatment at a salon at least once a month. She also suggests using the Shu Uemura Color Lustre line, which includes restorative ingredients, like refining lipids and musk-rose oil.
As for Abellan’s next color? Expect to see her in a darker hue. “I want to go dark gray or maybe dark blue,” she says.
