A few years ago, for the holidays, Chanel sent out adorable navy blue sweatshirts with the brand’s name written out in white lettering across the chest. Some had hoods, some did not, but either way, everyone in the fashion and beauty industry got one: makeup artists, beauty editors, fashion editors, stylists, celebrities (Kristen Stewart was spotted wearing hers out and about for a while), you name it. Now, I loved this sweatshirt. I wore it all the f’ing time. I liked to call it my “fashion life hack” because, when it came down to it, it was just a navy blue sweatshirt. But because it was Chanel, and it said Chanel, it made it fancy. Wear a sweatshirt to your friends birthday party at the cool new restaurant in town and people will think you’re lazy and rolled out of bed. Wear a sweatshirt that says Chanel on it, and no one will even notice you’re wearing a sweatshirt. Needless to say, thanks to that gift, I spent a lot of time being very, very comfortable. Now, you’re probably wondering why I have a gone on and on about a sweatshirt when the subject of this piece is obviously about hair? Because the hairstyle you see above — which I spotted on fashion blogger Charlotte Groeneveld’s Instagram account — is basically the hair accessory version of my Chanel sweatshirt.

I love hair accessories, but nice ones tend to be just as expensive as some high-end jewelry (which makes senses, they’re in essence jewelry for your head). And that’s why Groeneveld’s DIY hair accessory is so genius. The woman behind The Fashion Guitar found a way to create a “designer” hair accessory in the least expensive way possible: By taking a ribbon off a Chanel package and tying it around her low knot. Gift wrap — but make it fashion.
Ribbons and hair bows are definitely having a moment in the fashion world. We’ve seen them all over the runways for the past two seasons, with most designers preferring simple black ribbons in either grosgrain or velvet. “There’s something so nice about throwing a ribbon in your hair, and it’s versatile,” hairstylist Guido said backstage during the spring 2018 shows. “You can use it to dress up a plain t-shirt and jeans, but also chic enough to wear at night with a black evening dress.”
And you can see the trickle down effect from the runways this holiday season. Hair accessory designer extraordinaire, Jennifer Behr, came out with cute velvet hair bows that you can easily clip over a low ponytail or use to dress up a half-up style. And you can find cheaper alternatives at stores like ASOS, Anthropologie, and Free People (who carries a ton of options like this romantic silk number and this chic bow scrunchie).
There are plenty of options if you want to buy a ribbon or hair bow; but I totally get if don’t want to spend any more money this year, or if you only want to try this ribbon trend out once. If that’s the case, then follow Groeneveld’s lead and use the ribbon off one of your gifts this holiday season. It doesn’t have to be Chanel — although, I love the idea of taking something the luxury brand uses as almost as an afterthought (the ribbon around a box, or the fabric that ties the handles of a shopping bag together) and making it the star of the show. But honestly, any ribbon will do.
If you’re obsessing over this hairstyle as much as I am, however, and absolutely want a Chanel ribbon to tie around your hair, I have a few ideas that won’t cost you a couple thousand dollars. You can find a lucky friend or relative who was gifted something Chanel, or you can head to a Chanel boutique or beauty counter at a department store. Buy one of their awesome beauty products (see below for a list of some of our favorites) and ask it to be gift wrapped. Think of it like a two-in-one present for yourself — just make sure to ask for some extra ribbon. You know, in case of an emergency.
