Blame the World Cup. Blame hipsters in Brooklyn. Just blame someone. Of course, we’re talking about the male topknot: that small patch of hair that some guys grow just long enough to tie into a knot at the top of their head.
If you find this hairstyle offputting and unflattering, you’re not alone. And you’ll dig this video from the South African comedy team Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues. At least our less-than-mature side sure did. As one member of the team says, “It’s tiny—it looks like you’re balancing a rubberband on your head.”
So here’s what they did: They drove around Cape Town, snuck up on a few strangers (all men with topknots) and—bam!—snipped off the knots. Then they ran like hell. They collected all the knots in a jar and released them into the ocean. Unsurprisingly, the video received a lot of backlash. But before you get all upset about it, the duo quickly issued a press release and an official apology video, revealing that the entire thing was staged and that each person who got an uninvited haircut was one of their friends. So now it’s funny, and you don’t have to feel bad for laughing.
