This summer has been the season of ultimate hair switch-ups for Lena Dunham. First the Girls creator chopped her strands into an edgy pixie cut á la Katy Perry back in June. Later in the month, she was spied wearing a wig in shades of blue and purple (very unicorn-esque, if you will.)
Now the 31-year-old is back at it again, with a brand-spanking-new style and shade. She made her big reveal via Vogue.com to show off that her strands are now longer — falling just beneath her shoulders — and that bangs are part of the picture, too. But by far the biggest surprise was her new fiery RED hue. That’s right, y’all, Dunham is a brunette no longer. Her once medium-brown color has been replaced by a stunning shade of pumpkin spice. Or you know, reddish-orange.
So what exactly propelled Dunham to make such a drastic change to her aesthetic? A combination of things, actually: wrapping up her 7-year-long show and feeling unsure of what to do next, along with inspiration drawn from her mother, who was a redhead in the ’90s. “Once a month or so, using a health food–store paste resembling quicksand, she would cover her muddy head in Saran wrap and examine a copy of this very magazine until she shampooed to reveal a shade of copper natural to nobody but Jessica Rabbit,” she wrote. “I felt a redheaded mother was distinctly special — profoundly specific, a little witchy,” she added.
Dunham even shared some intimate photos (Polaroid-style) of the entire process, as well as a side-by-side of the before and after transformation. It’s safe to say it’s just a matter of time before we see even more of her new ‘do on Instagram. In the meantime, we’ll be over here contemplating going red. Ch-ch-changes are in the air, after all, don’t ya think?
