There are two types of hairstylists: those who wash, cut, blow-dry, and repeat and those who are true artists—as inspired and creative as any painter, dancer, or musician. Adir Abergel is in the latter camp. He’s responsible for coiffing some of the most famous heads of hair in the business (Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway, and Rooney Mara, to name a few), but he’s not your average celebrity hairdresser. The styles Abergel creates go beyond bouncy blowouts and soft chignons. He pushes the boundaries, finds inspiration from the fashion runways and fine art, and infuses every style with the perfect amounts of edge and romance that make you both question what you’re looking and want to try it on yourself immediately.
All of this is why I’m so excited he’s decided to design his own line of hair accessories with Lelet NY designer Sara Bieler Sasson. Abergel has always been inventive when it comes to decorating hair, using elastics, bobby pins, jewelry, and even fishing wire in interesting and unexpected ways. And his creations in gold, rhodium, and rose gold with Lelet NY are no less unique. If you follow him—or any of his clients—on Instagram, then you’ve seen some of them already. Abergel has been using them for recent red-carpet events and teasing them for months. But now they’re finally here, available for purchase on leletny.com, and we can finally show you the gorgeous pieces in all their glory in an exclusive photo shoot we did with Abergel and L.A.-based photographer Olivia Malone. So sit back, scroll through, and see hair accessories totally reimagined.
“I thought, Wouldn’t it be cool if hair accessories looked like heirloom pieces and you could layer them like jewelry?” says Abergel. (At top of page: Adir Abergel x Lelet NY Liquid Chain Comb*. *Above: Adir Abergel x Lelet NY Metallic Quill Bobbi.)
Abergel sketched his ideas—gold cuffs piercing the length of a braid or ponytail; metal barrettes piled one on top of another, stacking-ring style—on cocktail napkins, on planes, on set with Kristen Stewart. “She’s the only person I showed my ideas to at first,” he says. It took Abergel four months of doodling to come up with the entire collection, which includes chains, cuffs, gold feathers, and metal-studded hair elastics (that won’t rip your hair out).
“Designers like Saint Laurent and Calder could take a simple metal and make it look alive,” says Abergel. “That’s what I wanted to do for this collaboration.” (Above: Adir Abergel x Lelet NY Metallic Peak Pins and Metallic O Pins.)
