Think of Swiss braids and what comes to mind—Heidi? The Von Trapps? The St. Pauli girl? (For the record, she now sports a bombshell blowout.) Well, at Zurich fashion week yesterday, the designers of Opening Night broke from tradition and sent the models down the runway with a modern take on the classic plaits. All you need to try it at home is a big needle and some yarn.
But before you start sewing, you’ll need to do some braiding and pinning. Hairstylists created two inside-out French braids that ran along the top of the head, from the forehead to just past the crown, tying them both off with elastics. Then all the hair hanging down was gathered at the nape and twisted and pinned into a loopy, messy bun.
Here’s where things got awesome. Taking a thick needle and some black yarn, hairstylists sewed the two braids together. Starting on the right, they slipped the needle through the braid, then through the left braid, then back through the right, and so on until they reached the elastic. Then they repeated the technique starting with the left braid. The result was that the two threads crisscrossed each other in the center of the head, creating the same pattern as the shoelaces in your sneakers. The black yarn gives the look a sporty vibe (again, think shoelaces), but what I love about this style is that you could change the feel of it simply by changing the material you sew through your hair. A piece of metallic gold thread would look elegant, while a thin strip of suede would have a earthy, boho feel. Prepare to earn major Pinterest points if you pull this one off.
