Before Instagram, I mistakenly believed there was only one way to cut hair: Holding scissors horizontal to the ends of the hair. (Sorry to all the hairstylists out there for disrespecting your art like that.) Now that I spend way too much time scrolling through my Explore page before bed, I’ve seen every technique possible, including this hypnotizing bang trim and this satisfying buzz.
But I think I just encountered the most extra way to cut hair. Istanbul-based hairstylist Emre Ayaksız posted a video of one of his recent hair transformations, and to say it’s over the top is an understatement. I’ve never seen a haircut become such a theatrical production worthy of a Tony award.
In the quick clip, which has been viewed over a million times, Ayaksız chops off his client’s long hair in a diagonal shape with clippers before cleaning up the edges. Then, he snips the ends into a lob using tiny motions. From there, the stylist takes the bulk out of his client’s hair with a mesmerizing thinning technique. Next, Ayaksız runs the scissors down the length of her hair. As a final step, he moves on to coloring her hair.
By the end of the video, Ayaksız’s client has a gorgeous wavy blonde lob that’s perfectly layered, despite all the crazy snipping and clipping. TBH, I was convinced she wouldn’t have any hair left by the end of the video. Maybe the surprising result is why the video ended up going viral.
