The end of last week ushered in the crumbling of a long-lasting, carefully constructed facade. No, we’re not talking about Kylie Jenner coming out of her self-imposed cone of silence to reveal the birth of her daughter. Rather, the wispy bird’s nest on the top of President Donald Trump’s head was unraveled by the wind, simultaneously clearing up one of the nation’s most prevalent mysteries and prompting even more questions than before.
The moment, which took place as Trump boarded Air Force One on Friday, almost went completely unnoticed, buried by the weekend’s news of a plunging stock market, a history-making Super Bowl, and, of course, the arrival of world-famous newborn Stormi Webster. However, on Tuesday evening, writer Ashley Feinberg unearthed the incident and shared it with the world via Twitter, where she posted a video entitled “The Real Donald Trump.”
In the 21-second clip, POTUS is shown attacked by some particularly violent gusts of wind while heading up the stairs to the plane. The wind blew the combed-over part of his hairstyle straight up in the air and caused the gelled-down sides to flap around like small, feathery wings. The effect (likely much to the chagrin of a president with a well-documented preoccupation with physical appearances) is to completely expose exactly what is underneath that usually meticulous comb-over.
Trump’s hair became a topic of conversation and heated debate long before he ever announced his candidacy for president, though the memes and think pieces about the “creative” comb-over have undoubtedly reached a fever pitch since then. Mere days after he was sworn into office, the New York Times revealed that Trump takes a prescription medication that treats male-pattern hair loss, confirming that Trump’s hair is, in fact, his own.
More recently, in Michael Wolff’s controversial, bombshell book about the Trump presidency, Fire and Fury, the author claimed that even first daughter Ivanka Trump looks upon her father’s hair with disdain. “She treated her father with a degree of detachment, even irony, going so far as to make fun of his comb-over to others,” writes Wolff. “She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate — a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery — surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.”
Well, there we have it.
