Clear face sunscreens are finally having their day in the sun, thanks to brands like Glossier and K-beauty brands like P.rem. Their transparent finish makes sunscreen accessible to all skin tones. However, a beauty brand called Bolden is focusing on marketing its sunscreen specifically for darker skin tones. It just launched the SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer, a clear sunscreen that won’t leave even the slightest white cast on dark skin.
The women behind Bolden know the struggle of chalky SPF well. In fact, Bolden was formed out of this frustration. Chinelo Chidozie and Ndidi Obidoa, who were born in Nigeria and are now married to brothers, were on vacation in Key West and sought out sunscreen. “The sunscreens we bought left an unattractive white cast on us,” they tell Allure. “We saw an opportunity to make the shopping experience a more pleasant one with less trial and error for women with dark skin.”
With their backgrounds in finance (Chidozie worked on Wall Street for several year) and management consulting and biotech analytics (Obidoa has an MBA from MIT), they started Bolden with creating a sunscreen for people like themselves in mind. “In designing the line, we realized that like us, a lot of people with darker skin tones do not use sunscreen — mainly because of the misconception that they do not need it,” the women explain. “When they finally learn the importance, there is a lot of frustration experienced trying to find one that works.”
Chidozie and Obidoa point out that the true importance lies in the following factors.
“For one, everyone has the risk of getting cancer from sun exposure, although for people with dark skin the risk is generally lower. But when it occurs, it is more aggressive,” they explain. The second being the fact that the sun is responsible for a high percentage of visible facial aging signs.
So that’s where the Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer comes in. It’s a 3-in-1 product that “a chemical sunscreen to provide SPF protection that wears better on darker skin tones,” Chidozie and Obidoa say. “It also contains very a stable form of vitamin C, which has brightening corrective properties and is a great antioxidant, and finally, it is really moisturizing, so you can wear it by itself or underneath your makeup.” And this isn’t the only sunscreen that will be available from Bolden. The women hinted at several others in the pipeline that they will be bringing to the market soon.
The Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer offically launches on June 28. It will be $28 on boldenusa.com.
