Hillary Clinton’s political career may not be over just yet. The former Democratic nominee for president is reportedly mulling a run for mayor of New York City. According to TMZ, last month Clinton met with some major players on the New York City political scene to discuss the prospect. The outlet reports that a run is far from a sure thing but says that Clinton “has not ruled it out and is taking a real look at it.”
Clinton’s potential campaign comes in the wake of her loss of the presidential election to Donald Trump in November. Almost immediately after that event, rumors of a possible mayoral run surfaced, but were tamped down as Clinton maintained a low-profile.
Now as more time has passed since the election, the possibility is bubbling up once more. In recent months, Clinton has increased her level of public appearances and political engagement. Not too long ago, she told a gathering of women creators that “the future is female,” and just last week she spoke at her alma mater, Wellesley College, and addressed the unique challenges female politicians face on the campaign trail. There, she said of the way women are analyzed on public platforms: “You know you’re going to be subject to unfair and beside-the-point criticism.” Her decades-long career in public service is proof, however, that such treatment has never stopped her before.
Clinton has lived in New York since moving to the state to run for senator in 2000. She was elected twice before her first presidential campaign in 2008. If Clinton did make a bid for the New York City mayoral seat, it’s unclear how she would run. One possibility is that she could oppose current mayor Bill de Blasio in the Democratic primary, but she could also conceivably clear a path as an independent. We will, of course, be watching. We’re not hanging up our pantsuits just yet.
