Think you’re a few sizes too big to pull off that designer dress? Well, at least you’re not alone: So is Minnie Mouse. Barneys has announced a collaboration with The Walt Disney Co. for its latest holiday campaign, including a short animated film that will run in the store’s annual window displays. But the movie doesn’t show Mickey and the gang as we remember them. Instead, they’re walking a runway—and have the elongated bodies to match.
According to a recent article in WWD, Barneys wanted the Disney models to look “authentic.” Authentic, of course, meaning that Minnie, Daisy Duck, and the others now look like willowy Ukrainian 16-year-olds. “When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion,” Dennis Freedman, Barney’s creative director said in an interview with WWD. “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and [the Disney animators] agreed.”
So the animators, studying the proportions and expressions of real life models, gave the whole cast a complete(-ly terrifying, in my personal opinion) makeover. I don’t know about you, but when people started complaining about thinspo, I never thought it would be coming from a duck. Happy holidays!
