At the age of 51, Michaela Angela Davis is starting to feel beautiful. For the latest video in our Dispelling Beauty Myths series with StyleLikeU, the writer and activist talks about the expectation to look good for your age and what she really thinks is hot.
Spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with defined body parts. Instead, Davis is all about peace of mind. “Being peaceful is hot to me now,” she tells Allure. What’s not so hot to her? Botox and other facial fillers. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, just don’t expect Davis to indulge in them any time soon. “My face needs to be able to tell the truth,” she explains, “If I do something that stops it from telling the truth, then it’s not healthy for me.”
Despite saying she just now started to feel physically beautiful, Davis started having an open mind about her body when she was almost 27. Back then, she decided to have a baby, and people around her were worried. “They were all very concerned that having a baby, I was somehow somehow going to lose my mojo, my hip, my fly,” she explains. Sure, she thought so, too. But she says being pregnant was the first time in her life that she let go.
In the video above, watch as Michaela Angela Davis shares what it was like to go on CNN the day after the shooting in Charleston and how she’s dispelling the myth that you have to be young to have a voice.
