Children’s crayons have long been an inspiration for makeup brands. There was the Clinique Chubby Stick, one of the very first lip color-in-crayon-form on the market (which led to every other brand launching their own lip crayons), and eye shadow crayons (we can’t for the life of us remember who came out with them first but our bets are on Bobbi Brown), and NudeStix, the brand that believes every kind of makeup can be applied in crayon form (and they’re not entirely wrong). But now the shoe’s on the other foot: Crayola has reportedly teamed up with ASOS for a 58-product beauty line full of brightly-colored makeup and tools, all of which are made from vegan and cruelty-free materials. The products will be sold exclusively through the British online retailer.
Crayola dipped into their Big Box of Crayons for this project. The products span a rainbow-colored range of 95 shades and include items like multi-colored mascaras, color-changing lipsticks, shimmery highlighters, makeup brushes, and palettes for the eyes, lips, and face. Unsurprisingly, there are multiple riffs on the iconic Crayola crayon. The versatile “Face Crayons” will be packaged in either singles or sets of three, with the latter arriving in the brand’s iconic green and yellow boxes — though it’s unclear whether those boxes come with that coveted crayon sharpener on the back. All the products, ranging in price from $15 to $40, drop on ASOS’s site on June 4, at which time you can set your inner child free and color as far outside the lines as you please. This isn’t Crayola’s first foray into beauty. Early last year, the 133-year-old company joined forces with Clinique to create crayon-inspired Chubby Stick Lip Colour Balms. Not only did those hydrating lip colors come in shades similar to those found in a Crayola box, but they were also given names matching those of your most beloved crayons, including Razzmatazz, Mauvelous, Fuzzy Wuzzy, and Tickle Me Pink. A few months later, in July 2017, the brand teamed up with Sally Hansen to collab on a brightly colored line of nail polishes, again featuring monikers plucked straight from that coveted 64-pack: Vivid Violet, Wild Strawberry, Sunset Orange, Carnation Pink, Purple Heart, Granny Smith Apple, and Dandelion, among several others.
