When you’re so fully tuned in to the big, beautiful world of online makeup tutorials, it can be hard to remember that not everybody is as big of a makeup expert as you. One college student learned that in the funniest way possible, when a few of her guy friends’ heads nearly exploded after learning about the oh-so-mysterious concept of fake lashes.
Last week, Jade Zanatta, a student at the University of Victoria in Canada, was hanging out with her friends Traben and Angus when they asked her how she had grown her eyelashes “so much longer and darker since the last time” they had seen her, according to Buzzfeed. Zanatta said she explained to the boys that she was wearing false eyelashes, which only confused them further.
She offered to show them just how easy it is to remove and reattach falsies, and luckily, she captured their mystified reactions in a video that was shared to Twitter by one of her friends. In the video, Zanatta explains that there’s a type of glue specifically for false lashes, to which one of the boys responds incredulously, “Why would you do that?!” She replies, “Have you never heard of gluing them on?” before saying, “Watch this,” and peeling off one set of lashes. The boys’ response to this mind-blowing witchcraft is hilarious: Their jaws drop, one yells “stop!” while the other lets out a dramatic gasp, and then they both fall into a stunned silence. Finally, one works up the courage to ask, with real concern in his voice, “Do you still have eyelashes?!”
The video has since been retweeted more than 30,000 times and received more than 70,000 likes. Women have responded to the tweet, fawning over Traben and Angus’ sweet naiveté, while also sharing their own stories of the first times they taught men about fake eyelashes. Meanwhile, a few men who saw Zanatta’s video have also responded with their own amazed reactions.
