I guess I had my first one about seven months ago. The pleasure was so overwhelming, it could only be described as ecstatic. And then after that it just kept happening—mostly at my desk, and mostly while browsing the Internet. I’m talking about a nailgasm, of course (c’mon, get your minds out of the gutter). What’s a nailgasm, you might ask? Director and fellow nail-art fanatic Ayla “Brass” Montgomery coined the term for her new documentary on the subject, called NAILgasm. Her definition:
Nailgasm (neyl-gaz-uhm), n.
1. The physical and emotional sensation experienced at the peak of excitation from the artistic treatment of fingernails.
2. Intense or unrestrained excitement resulting from the visual stimulation of such art.
3. A global nail-art obsession resulting in the uprising of innovative nail artists and nail-savvy entrepreneurs worldwide.
NAILgasm sets out to document the phenomenon that has lit up the beauty industry over the past two years. Funded by Kickstarter and promoted through Tumblr, the 35-minute film has received a ton of buzz on the web, and rightly so. Montgomery interviewed practically the entire who’s who of the nail-art world, from Nail Porn founder and U.K. nail artist Sophy Robson to Nagisa Tushima of Disco Nail in Shiuya, Japan, to get the scoop on why nail art has become so popular in today’s society. (She actually went to Japan to talk to Tushima, which is important, since that’s really where the trend got its wings—not to mention, it gave her the opportunity to film some serious nailgasms.) Montgomery also talked to nail artists here in the U.S., including Naomi Yasuda (who has worked with Lady Gaga) and Donne and Ginny from Hey Nice Nails, the blogger and nail-artist sister duo featured in my nail-art story that ran in our September issue. If you’re a nail-art freak like me, I definitely suggest checking out this film. To watch it costs less than what you pay for your lunch ($2 to rent, $7 to download) and it’s a guaranteed half hour of ecstasy. Now who wouldn’t want to experience that?
