Matte lipstick has been having a moment in makeup for most of 2016. With brands like Kylie Cosmetics and Colourpop known for their formulas that stay put, it can be hard to choose just one. Luckily, Pinterest is making the decision much easier: M.A.C. Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in High Drama is trending with over 12,000 repins.
Despite Pinterest’s winter trend report, I have to confess: I tend to favor creamy formulas over matte. You might say I haven’t found the right lipstick to convert me yet. So far, they’ve all either been too drying or not the right color for my skin tone. So when I came across M.A.C. Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in High Drama, I knew I had to try it. Pinterest wouldn’t let me down, right?
At first glance, I really thought this lipstick was about to become my new go-to. It’s ultra-dark which pretty much matches the mood of a New Yorker when the Polar Vortex inevitably sets in. With any matte lipstick, the application is so important to keep your lips moisturized. I started off by applying chapstick and then nude lipliner over my entire lips before reaching for the M.A.C. Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick. The formula is extremely pigmented, but it took a few coats to spread the deep wine color evenly over my lips. The first thing I noticed is that the color shows up more purplish on lips than it does in the tube. It took a few minutes to dry, during which I had to resist the urge to move my mouth too much. But after that it really did stay put without feeling too tight on my lips.

Even Shay Mitchell is a fan of this M.A.C. favorite. She recently posted an Instagram wearing High Drama, proving that the dark shade can be paired with dramatic eye makeup too.

Makeup artist Terry Barber, who used this lipstick in Marco De Vincenzo’s spring 2017 show, gave us the scoop on what makes this product stand out: “I like the way you put it on as a liquid, but when it dries it suddenly brightens and mattifies so intensely that if you do a glossy skin against it, the contrast of that—the dewy skin and the matte lip—is just something really beautiful. “It’s just a bit more powerful than your average lipstick.”
If you’re looking for a bold, all eyes-on-you lipstick High Drama should definitely be in the running. Two co-workers complimented my lipstick from all the way across the office and a random stranger kept staring down at my lips on the subway ride home. But while the M.A.C. lipstick lasted for longer than a glossier formula, I noticed that it started to come off in weird sections. The color chipped away little by little—a reminder that a dark lip like this one takes commitment no matter what type of formula you’re wearing.
