Just when you thought 2017 had reached peak “WTF,” ponytail brows were born into existence.
What are “ponytail brows,” you ask? Well, they are literally eyebrows… with ponytails. The look was created by makeup artist Mary Jane and initially discovered by PopSugar. The only good news — a.k.a. the only thing helping maintain my faith in humanity — is that the arch style was designed in Photoshop and are not made out of actual extra-long eyebrow hair and a micro scrunchie. Still, in the age of squiggle brows, feather brows, and barbed wire brows, nothing is really all that surprising anymore.
The comments section on the Instagram post is pretty much exactly what you would expect, ranging from “Oh god, please no” to “I’m calling the police.” Some commenters were serious in their inquiries, asking Mary Jane which lashes and eye shadow she used to create the non-Photoshopped parts of her beauty look (Dodo Lashes in style D105 and the Morphe 35N palette, in case you were wondering).
While much of 2017’s brow game hasn’t exactly been on fleek (yikes, is that still a thing?), there are a few gems that have risen from the dust to restore faith in the future of brows. First, there was the mesmerizing art of brow carving, which popped up on everyone’s Insta-feeds this summer. Then there were metallic brows, which almost too cool. It’s honestly a miracle no one had thought of them until now.
The biggest takeaway of this year’s brows-a-palooza, though, is how wildly polarizing it’s been. People regularly get into full-on heated arguments in the comments sections of these photos over whether the trends are good, bad, ugly, etc. It’s pretty hilarious to watch it all go down, but really, who cares? Whether the Internet likes the trend or not (TBD if there will ever even be a verdict on that), eyebrow art doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon.
Plus, if anyone actually can figure out how to style their brows into an actual ponytail without the help of Photoshop, that’s a feat that deserves to be cele-brow-ted. (OK, now we’re done.)
