Scandal is back! Scandal is back!!! Are you watching it right now? We have some behind-the-scenes scoop from makeup artist Sheri Knight, a.k.a. the woman responsible for the beautiful, natural makeup Olivia Pope wears every week. “The one note I got from the producers was that Kerry’s makeup shouldn’t stand out too much,” she says. Here’s how she keeps clean skin and shimmery neutrals from being blah.
Shimmery eyes. “Solid shadows look too dull on camera,” says Knight, who prefers layering Washington’s lids with the bronze, gold, and pewter shadow from Lorac The Pro Palette. “I’m going for depth and the tiniest bit of twinkly, reflected light.”
Then, she says, “I smudge a thin line of Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in black on her upper lash lines and Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Spiced Chocolate under the lower lash lines and finish it all off with a couple of good coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara.“
Layered blush. In general, cream blush tends to absorb into the skin more readily than a powder formula, so it ends up looking more natural. Knight spreads a peachy brown cream (she likes Stila Convertible Color in Camellia) on the apples of Washington’s cheeks, but then she livens it up by finishing with a very light dusting of a shimmery pink powder (Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blush in Pure). “It keeps the cream from melting under the lights and adds a bit of dimension,” she says.
Even lip color. Knight fills in Washington’s lips with Laura Mercier Lip Liner in Hazelnut Tea, and then she dabs on a caramel-tinted balm, Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel. “You get this perfectly even finish that heightens the natural color of her lips,” she says. “And because liners tend to have a slightly drier finish, it really stays on—even through the kissing scenes.”
