We’re always looking for new beauty-related things to report on, no matter how bizarre or kooky. So when we caught wind of temporary lip tattoos by a company called Violent Lips, we were pumped to try them, envisioning a Minx-like effect (Minx are the cool nail foils) on the lips. The lip-tat idea was born after the company’s co-founder, Jeff Haddad, saw his teenage daughters put Chanel temporary tattoos on their lips for a charity function. He decided to design ones specifically for the lips (go, dad!).
Our test: Editorial assistant Sophia Panych (above, right) and I (above, left) picked out our favorite designs—I chose The Pink Polka (hot pink with white polka dots); Panych went with The Red Zebra (they’re also available in rainbow, fishnet, and glittery options).
The company’s how-to tutorial makes the application seem simple. However, it takes some serious skill: Holding separate top-lip and bottom-lip pieces (see below) over your lips, you trace your lips’ natural shape (I needed someone to help me trace) and then cut out the shapes (you basically need the precision of an X-acto knife to match your lip shape perfectly). The rest of the process is similar to how you put on a temporary skin tattoo: Remove a clear plastic covering, press the tats onto your lips, blot with water-saturated tissues, and peel to reveal the pattern on your lips. Once we finally got them in place, we loved how cool they looked (I felt like Nicki Minaj for a second) and even attracted a crowd in the office—one editor said I looked like Minnie Mouse. Funny, huh? Well, don’t laugh—as soon as you smile, the thin material cracks and crinkles up. And while you’re at it, don’t talk, press your lips together, or drink anything. Because of the lip tats’ short life span, they’re best for a quirky Facebook photo or Halloween party—which, in all likelihood, is the only place you would wear them anyway.
