October has not only been the month of mermaid makeup and pumpkin spice everything, it’s also been all about expansions of foundation shade ranges. (Hallelujah!) And the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation was just added to the growing list of products upping their inclusion game, along with Maybelline New York, Topshop, and Anastasia Beverly Hills. After all, everyone deserves to find our perfect shade of foundation, right? Thirteen new shades of the Lock-It Foundation launched this month, bringing the line to a total of 30. That’s not the widest selection of shades we’ve ever encountered (one of Make Up For Ever’s comes in at 40), but it’s definitely a higher number than many brands at the moment.
The most notable additions are Light 41 Neutral, a fair ivory, and Deep 81 Cool, a deep espresso. These are now the lightest and darkest shades in the line. The expansion also includes two other light shades, six medium ones, and three fresh choices for dark skin tones. These 13 new choices alone make up most full foundation lines.

Lovers of the brand’s best-selling long-wear foundation will notice that it has a new, minimalist look. It still has the convenient one-pump-and-go delivery system (yes, it really does dispense just the right amount for your whole face), but the previous black-and-silver rose design has been replaced with a sleek wax seal-inspired embellishment. Vegans will be glad to know that the formula is now 100 percent cruelty-free and made with no animal-derived ingredients. Kat Von D has been working to make all the products in her beauty collection vegan-friendly.
Learn about face baking:
The Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation is my go-to foundation for special occasions—like my cousin’s wedding or best friend’s New Year’s Eve party—when I want my skin to look as flawless as possible in photos and stay put while I dance off all the cake and champagne calories to Beyoncé’s complete discography. Even though it’s full coverage, it doesn’t feel heavy or cakey like others tend to do. Plus, I like how the brand makes it easy to find the right shade for your undertones by denoting warm, cool, or neutral. After taking a quick peek at your veins to find out which undertone you have, you easily narrow the 30 choices down a bit.
All 30 shades of the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation are available now for $35 on sephora.com. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can buy eight and recreate Von D’s intricate pointillism application.
