For a woman as versatile as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker, one lipstick—or sexual position—would never do. She wore three lipsticks in Fifty Shades Darker, according to an Instagram post from the film’s key makeup artist, Evelyne Noraz. (Of course, it goes without saying that when we reference the fictional Anastasia Steele, we’re talking about the very real Dakota Johnson.)
Throughout much of the film, Dakota Johnson totally nails Anastasia’s more naive, still-wet-behind-the-ears vibe—and her beauty game is reflective of that. For when Johnson is playing Steele as her core self, Neoraz created a retro-inspired look—think heavy fringe, a dark swipe of winged liner, and an innocent-looking red pucker. When painting Johnson’s lips, Neoraz used M.A.C. Cosmetics Lip Liner in Cherry and M.A.C. Retro Matte Lipstick in Feel So Grand. The duo had a soft finish that read quietly sexy onscreen.

And then there’s Steele’s “I’m all business” look. To really make Johnson’s eyes stand out, Neoraz tapped ILIA Lipstick in Arabian Knights. Since the watermelon shade goes on like a stain, you can build up a few layers of tint to make an opacity as pigmented as you like. It’s also a blue-based tone that works well with a variety of complexions.
Finally, we see Anastasia release her inner sex goddess with a fully-in-charge-at-work-and-in-the-bedroom look from Glossier. For the all-grown-up vibe, Neoraz filled in Johnson’s lips with M.A.C. Lip Liner in Burgundy and then added that extra layer of depth with Glossier Generation G Matte Lipstick in Jam, an earthy berry magenta. For those steamy makeout scenes with Mr. Grey, she swapped the Glossier stain for the staying-put power of Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in Heathers, a peachy brick.
