Your summer Spotify playlist doesn’t have to be filled (or even speckled) with Jacob Plant for you to appreciate the British DJ’s latest music video. For his new single About You, which features singer Maxine, he called upon green-haired dancer Matthew Gibbs to bust some moves while completely covered in holographic glitter. Instead of relying on the help of CGI, professional makeup artist Lavonne Anthony made the stunning sight happen with a little makeup magic.
The music video begins with Gibbs, who quickly realizes his arm is growing a patch of glitter. As the song continues, the glitter spreads throughout his body until his entire being is sparkling brighter than a disco ball. “The director and artist came up with the concept to make it appear as though the dancer had a virus that was going to spread and completely overcome his entire body,” Anthony tells Allure. “He had to accept the fact that this was his fate.” Honestly, there are worse fates to accept. At least this fictional character got to become a holographic human. I’m sure several people on Instagram would love to experience that for themselves.
Surprisingly, coating Gibbs’ entire body in glitter only took about an hour to complete. (Washing it all off in the shower took him just as long, BTW.) Anthony started off with the smaller sections on his arms, stomach, and neck, by painting on black liquid latex in specific designs. Then, she pressed on a combo of Make Up For Ever’s Medium Size Glitters and Large Size Glitters into a shade, called Silver Multicolored, atop them. “[This glitter] had the best texture, was safe around the eyes, and was the brightest,” Anthony explains. By the time the final shoot had wrapped, Anthony had used six full jars of both glitters: three of the medium and three of the large.
When the time came to glitter-fy Gibbs’ face and full body, Anthony applied Vaseline everywhere. (Petroleum jelly is a lot gentler on skin and body hair than glitter glue or liquid latex. Plus, the removal process is as simple was wiping the jelly away.) Then, she spread the glitter on with her hands. “I also placed some in a paper plate and then blew it on with a hair dryer to get an even spread,” Anthony adds.

Of course, during this whole process, glitter got everywhere. However, to keep it in place while Gibbs popped and locked to About You, Anthony had to take extra precautions. She sprayed him with Green Marble Selr Setting Spray, a heavy-duty makeup sealant that puts Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray to shame.
