M.A.C. may be known for its killer collaborations (Cinderella, Selena, Giambattista Valli), but we also love the company because it helps women shine—even when they don’t feel their most beautiful.
Last November, M.A.C. ran a contest called MACnificent Me, for which it asked its biggest fans to submit a photo and a 100-word essay about the life mantra that speaks to their style, heart, and soul. Six winners were flown to New York City in February for a photo and video shoot—for which they wore the M.A.C. MACnificent Me fall color collection to tell their story. Today, the brand introduced us to winner Luzmaria Vargas, a woman from Anaheim, California, who wants people to recognize that beauty doesn’t always come in a size two.
“This whole opportunity is going to change my life in so many ways. My culture is more about finger-pointing,” Vargas says in her video. She goes on to explain the hurtful moment when she was at a party and her friends said, “Let’s take a picture,” but instead of asking Vargas to be in the picture, they asked her to take the photo instead. “It hurts, because some people just think that because you’re overweight, you don’t have feelings,” says Vargas. “But with this [campaign], I’m going to prove that look, I don’t have a gorgeous body, and I don’t think I’m beautiful. But I didn’t need a gorgeous body. It was really the inside that counted, and I don’t need to be a size two and skinny. I’m here.” Watch the video yourself to see how gorgeous Vargas looks in M.A.C.’s fall collection.
