The beauty marketplace is starting (starting!) to offer more lines and products for darker skin tones, but they don’t seem to be enough. It’s not just foundation, lipstick, and blush that need to come in a wider array, it’s also luxury skin care.
Darker skin has different issues to tackle than pale skin, from inflammation to hyperpigmentation. But there’s a new brand that’s filling a big hole in the marketplace, courtesy of Angela Bassett. The actress (who seriously gives us so many #goals to aspire to) teamed up with Dr. Barbara Sturm to create Darker Skin Tones by Barbara Sturm.
“African-American skin, or skin of color, problems [revolve] mainly [around] inflammation,” Sturm told WWD. Her new line contains “real ingredients which are scientifically shown to address inflammation.” It also combats anti-aging, so it’s generally going to be awesome all around.
Bassett, who posted about the line on her Instagram, is reportedly a fan of Sturm’s other skin products, so the two researched and developed the new collection after two years of work. According to the actress, the process was about learning what works for dark skin “and to see what is good for it and ingredients that are helpful, not invasive or irritating,” she said. “I like [women] to be pleased when they look in the mirror, to feel good about themselves and the condition of their complexion.”
The five-product line includes two cleansers (foam and enzyme), two face creams of varying richness, and a serum. Prices range from $58 to $335 and will be sold at Harrod’s and online starting next month.
If it means we’ll look anything like Angela Bassett, we’ll happily buy it!
