Many of us can’t resist a good old-fashioned makeover, whether it’s a celebrity on the pages of People or a housewife on The Today Show. But when the Cinderella transformation involves plastic surgery and documents every nip and tuck, it sometimes threatens to become less of a big reveal and more of an over share.
On this week’s episode of *Real Housewives of Orange County, Alexis Bellinos goes to her plastic surgeon *to have him check-up on her recent rhinoplasty. Once the bandages come off, we see blackened eyes and a bruised, crusted-over nose—oh, plus photos of the mucus plugs they pulled from her sinuses, just in case you were wondering.
The scene brought me back to my days of watching plastic surgery shows like Dr. 90210 and Extreme Makeover. To a certain extent, they intrigued me, because they showed the most intense and personal of ugly-duckling-turned-swan stories—with a little help from modern medicine, of course. Even though I’m the most squeamish person alive (truly, I feel faint at the sight of a mere paper cut) seeing someone get a facelift had the morbid fascination of a car wreck. I felt physically nauseous, but I still couldn’t look away.
But when I caught sight of Bellinos’s bloody, messy face, I realized I just can’t stomach witnessing the process itself. From now on, I would rather skip right to the after shots, thank you.
Maybe I’m just a wimp. Does plastic surgery make you want to change the channel? Or do you pull out the popcorn?
