Usually, when a celebrity posts a makeup-free pic on social media, they make headlines for their “bravery” and unabashed “realness.” Jessica Simpson’s latest unaltered selfie, however, is making waves for a completely different — and completely ridiculous — reason.
On Thursday, the singer posted the shot, in which she lays in bed and smiles at the camera without a drop of makeup, on Instagram with the caption, “Good Morning.” And while many of Simpson’s followers responded with cheerful A.M. greetings and marveled at her glowing skin, a handful of cyberbullies chose instead to pick on what they perceived as Simpson’s overabundance of lip fillers.
“You are such a naturally beautiful woman! Why overdo the lip/facial filler!? We All know you don’t need it! Xoxo,” one Instagram user commented, seemingly pretending to be kind while simultaneously shaming a complete stranger for her physical appearance.
Though their account makes no mention of being a plastic surgeon or having any sort of expertise in that arena, the same person continued to share their “expertise” in judging others’ looks in a second comment: “This is what over injected [sic] lips look like. They just don’t close/rest naturally. It’s obviously unnatural looking [sic] to a lot of people, but she apparently prefers this look,” they wrote. “Her laugh lines (parentheses around the mouth and nose) are over injected [sic] as well drawing even more attention to her lips. A little bit goes a long way and some people just tend to overdo it.”
Others were equally and just as unnecessarily judgmental. “Dude what happened to ur [sic] face? Sorry but too much botox and lip fillers. U [sic] look like a different person,” one Instagrammer wrote. “Yo is this you without makeup?? plastic [sic] surgery destroys original beauty,” another oh-so-helpful commenter added.
This all brings us to your daily reminder that, unless specifically asked for, nobody has the right to comment on or judge anyone else’s appearance, nor their choice to get plastic surgery or fillers. As Jessica Simpson herself once sang, in the criminally underrated “I Belong to Me,” “I belong to me/ I don’t belong to you/ My heart is my possession/ I’ll be my own reflection.” You heard her: She’s not looking for anyone’s approval but her own.

Simpson has been accused of getting and overdoing lip fillers before, despite the fact that she shared more than a decade ago that she didn’t love how she looked with injections. “I had that Restylane stuff. But it fades — it went away in like four months,” she told Glamour in 2006. “My lips are back to what they were. Thank God! It looked fake to me. I didn’t like that.”
Now, can we all go back to wondering how Simpson, apparently, wakes up looking like a glow-y queen every morning?
