Kendall Jenner may be the unofficial queen of the fashion universe, but that hasn’t prevented her from feeling insecure at times. Yesterday, she got honest about it in a blog post on her personal website about having struggled with “bad acne” while she was growing up.
Jenner’s acne, like so many people’s, started when she was in middle school, a fragile time for self esteem regardless of what’s going on with your skin. “Where it really impacted me was how self-conscious I became about it,” Jenner says. “It completely ruined my self esteem. I wouldn’t even look at people when I talked to them. I felt like such an outcast; when I spoke, it was with my hand covering my face.”
This isn’t the first time Jenner opened up about her past struggles with acne; in her March 2015 Allure interview, she reflected on the experience, using notably similar language. “It was not a good time for me—it just killed my self-esteem,” Jenner said at the time. “I thought when I didn’t look at someone, they couldn’t see my face.”
So how did Jenner fight back against her skin attacker? She found an “incredible dermatologist” to help clear everything up. (We have a comprehensive guide to getting rid of acne that can’t hurt, either.) Now, Jenner relies on Laser Genesis (an in-office laser treatment) to help keep breakouts at bay. She also credits her sisters with helping her get through what she considers a difficult phase in her life. “I remember sitting by the pool at home, and my older sisters always told me to keep my hands off my face and to never pick,” says Jenner. (Excellent advice, for the record!)
Jenner has now been acne-free now for three years, but she stresses that her acne-fighting process didn’t happen overnight. In her Allure interview, she spoke about how modeling has helped boost her confidence. “I still have a hard time looking at someone when I’m talking to them, and I get nervous,” she said. “When I started getting in front of the camera a lot, I think my confidence started to come out. It took a minute, because I had to believe in myself.” Jenner now says that getting older has made her let go of those feelings of insecurity. “I realized that it’s a part of life for some people and it doesn’t define who you are,” she says. See? With age comes wisdom.
